Some people often mistake kidney pain brought about by infection as a mere muscle strain. Since both are located at the same area, it can be hard to tell which one is which. Kidney pain, a sudden and extreme pain at the lower back of the body, is indeed one of the symptoms of kidney stone and kidney infection. Located right below the rib cage and right above the hip, the kidney can be very painful due to the two causes stated.

Where does pain from renal infection occur?
The pain that comes from renal infection is typically located in the back portion where the kidneys are also located, just to the sides of the spine and above the hips. If this pain were really due to kidney, that area would experience tenderness.

However, there are times when kidneys are injured indirectly through a contact that causes trauma at that area. Getting hit in that particular area is also referred to as kidney punch. This is also the area that hurts when there is back trauma.

How does this differ from a lower back injury?
When gently pushed on that area, an injured lower back does not tend to worsen. Its condition stays the same. However, when you gently push the area and the kidneys are the cause, the pain becomes more painful.

There are also other symptoms that go with kidney infection that can tell the difference such as painful urination, more frequent urination, lower amounts of urine, fever, and blood in the urine.

What are the causes of renal pain?
There are several cause of renal pains such as kidney stones, kidney infection, or internal kidney bleeding. A kidney stone might be blocking urine, which forces the urine to go back to the kidney and cause swelling. Or a kidney infection and inflammation can lead to kidney swelling as well, which causes the pain.

When does the pain go away?
The pain goes away once the kidney infection has been healed or once the kidney stone has passed.

Before you assume that what you are feeling is mere lower back pain, be more sensitive to how you feel when you press that area and if you feel other symptoms with it.
