Reverse Scoliosis
Spine Surgery – What You Should Expect Afterwards by Lisa
Spine surgery is going to be a fairly complicated and delicate process. You should prepare to spend an ample amount of downtime recovering and allowing your body to heal properly. Depending on what type of procedure you have done on your spine, the amount of time you have to stay at the hospital will vary. Lumbar decompression and cervical procedures will have staying for around 2 days, while a fusion procedure will have you there up to 5. Things like reversing scoliosis are much more complex and will require even more time.
On your first day after spine surgery, when you are still in the hospital, your day will be spent mostly resting, with plenty of pain medications. Your medicine needs will be finely tuned and you can expect plenty of blood tests to be taken. You will likely have a PCA pump to dispense your pain meds, as needed. On day 2, the drainage tubes that were likely put into your incisions, should be taken out. Your PCA pump will usually be replaced with pills instead. Physical therapy can either start on day 1 or day 2, depending on how able you are to stand and walk.
On days 3 to 5 after your spine surgery there will be more focus placed on rehab. Usually at some point during this time, your doctor will decide you are ready to go home. Your physical therapist will play a part in helping to determine this as well. You may see the doctors that performed the surgery drop by, but they are no longer in charge of making medical decisions for you. When leaving, you can ride in a car home, but you cannot drive yourself. The car also needs to easy to access too. Before leaving you may as well schedule your first checkup appointment, as that will usually be only ten days away.
For your first several weeks at home after you have spine surgery, you will need to spend a lot time mostly resting and taking it easy, as you will feel pretty tired. You don’t want to spend all day lying around in bed, however. You should divide your time evenly between lying around and being up and moving around. For the first couple weeks, it would be smart to have someone else there to assist you, should you need help with anything. You will have routine checkups with your doctor at 10 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year later, with annual doctor visits every year after that.
